UK Unveils Major Defence Investment Plan

The United Kingdom has launched a long-delayed defence investment plan worth nearly £300 billion, aimed at strengthening military capabilities, nuclear deterrence, and emerging technologies ahead of growing security threats.

Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a £15 billion increase, bringing defence spending to 2.7% of GDP by 2029

Over €73 billion will go to the UK’s nuclear deterrent, while €9.3 billion is allocated to the Global Combat Air Programme fighter jet project with Italy and Japan

Experts say the plan improves predictability but still falls short of fully funding the UK’s defence needs, especially in air and missile defence

Mark Rutte welcomed the plan, as allies face increasing pressure to raise military spending ahead of the next NATO Summit 2026
