IOC Eases Restrictions on Russian Athletes

The International Olympic Committee has relaxed restrictions on Russian athletes.

July 07, 2026:

Russian athletes will be allowed to compete in team events and qualification tournaments for the 2028 Summer Olympics, subject to eligibility checks

Athletes must still compete as neutral participants, pass enhanced anti-doping controls, and demonstrate no links to Russia’s military or support for the war

IOC President Kirsty Coventry said athletes should not be punished for war, while reaffirming the IOC’s support for Ukraine

Russia’s flag, anthem, and government representation remain banned, and the IOC will continue not to stage events in Russia
