The leadership change followed mass protests in Kyiv and other cities, where demonstrators criticised Syrskyi’s command style and called for military reforms
Drapatyi is widely regarded as a modern, reform-oriented battlefield commander with extensive frontline experience against Russian forces
Zelenskyy said the reshuffle is intended to modernise Ukraine’s military leadership, strengthen defence capabilities and improve pressure on Russia
Former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov had publicly clashed with Syrskyi over Ukraine’s military strategy, accusing him of resisting reforms and opposing the greater use of drones and modern battlefield technologies
Syrskyi, a career military officer who led Ukraine’s successful defence of Kyiv in 2022 as well as the Kharkiv and Kursk operations, had become an increasingly controversial figure because of his traditional command style and high battlefield casualty rates
