EU Fines Google €890 Million for Two DMA Violations

The European Commission has imposed two fines totalling €890 million on Google for breaching EU competition rules governing online search and app stores.

Google received a €460 million fine for favouring its own shopping, travel and other specialised services over competing providers in search results

A separate €430 million penalty concerned Google Play restrictions that limited app developers’ ability to direct users towards cheaper purchasing options outside the platform

The penalties are Google’s first under the Digital Markets Act and together constitute the largest fine imposed under the legislation so far

Google is expected to challenge the decisions, while the enforcement action risks intensifying transatlantic tensions over EU regulation of major American technology companies
