Ukraine: Zelensky’s Top Aide Yermak Resigns Amid Expanding $100 Million Corruption Probe
Andriy Yermak, head of the President’s Office, submitted his resignation after anti-corruption investigators raided his home as part of a widening $100 million energy-sector corruption probe. Long considered President Zelensky’s closest adviser and a key link to Western allies, Yermak has been central to Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The investigation, led by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), has already implicated senior current and former officials, as well as one of Zelensky’s business associates who fled the country. It is the most serious corruption scandal of Zelensky’s presidency.
Zelensky said:
“There will be a reset of the President’s Office, […] Andriy Yermak, the head of the President’s Office, has submitted his resignation. I am grateful to Andriy for always presenting Ukraine’s position in the negotiation track exactly as it needed to be.”
Mykyta Poturaiev, a lawmaker from Zelensky’s party, endorsed the decision:
“Yermak staying in his chair could definitely lead us to bad consequences on the international arena and to a deepening of our domestic social crisis.”
So far, Zelensky has not been personally implicated in the scheme, though the involvement of close associates raises questions about oversight and his political responsibility. A key goal of his 2019 election campaign was to bring corruption in Ukraine under control, a central requirement for EU accession. Russia also repeatedly exploits the narrative of a corrupt Ukraine, using it to undermine European support for Kyiv.
Pressure had been mounting on Zelensky to remove Yermak, and the scandal has become the most serious domestic crisis of his presidency. Earlier this year, a separate but related attempt to curb the independence of anti-corruption bodies triggered the first major anti-government protests since the start of the war; after pressure from protesters and the EU, Kyiv reversed course. The political turmoil comes amid ongoing Russian attacks and U.S. pressure on Ukraine to consider peace negotiations. Zelensky said Ukraine is preparing for upcoming talks with the United States, led by senior military, diplomatic, and intelligence officials.
