Pillay Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, recognising her work for international justice as legal institutions face growing political pressure.

On 9 October, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to the South African jurist for promoting peace and international law

Pillay served at the Rwanda tribunal and the International Criminal Court, then as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014

Her work helped establish that rape and sexual violence can constitute genocide. The committee highlighted her contribution to accountability for international crimes

The award also drew controversy: Israel condemned it following the Gaza genocide findings of the UN inquiry she chaired. The committee’s citation did not single out Israel or any government
