October 7: Three Years of Loss

Three years after the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel, the anniversary recalls the victims and hostages, the immense Palestinian suffering in Gaza and rising antisemitism internationally.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led terrorists killed around 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and took 251 people into Gaza as hostages, according to Israeli authorities

Hostages returned through negotiated releases and rescue operations. The last 20 living hostages were freed on 13 October 2025; the remains of the last hostage, Ran Gvili, were recovered and returned on 26 January 2026

Israel’s subsequent campaign devastated Gaza. UNRWA, citing the health ministry in Hamas-governed Gaza, reported 73,914 deaths by 20 September 2026, without distinguishing civilians from combatants

Antisemitic incidents surged in many countries after 7 October. Tel Aviv University reports that levels across Western countries remained above pre-attack levels in 2025, with trends varying by country
