The Czech billionaire and populist leader Andrej Babiš has signalled his intention to curb Czech military aid, challenge NATO’s rearmament plans, and attack the European Commission’s Green Deal.
Yet Otto Eibl, a political analyst at Masaryk University in Brno, doubts that Czechia will align itself with the Slovakia–Hungary axis that often obstructs EU initiatives. Instead, he warns that difficulties may emerge if Babiš seeks alliances with extremist parties at home, both on the left and the right.
Babiš, a right-wing populist who puts “Czech interests first,” takes a strongly national approach. Still, his track record shows flexibility: he adapts to changing circumstances whenever it serves his purposes. Unlike Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, he is less an ideologue than a pragmatist – one who uses the EU as a tool to advance his own political and economic goals.
