UK and Germany Ratify Kensington Treaty

Britain and Germany have launched a partnership against cyberattacks and sabotage, strengthening European security cooperation as Prime Minister Andy Burnham seeks closer EU ties.

On 8 October, Burnham met Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. They completed ratification of the Kensington Treaty, signed in July 2025

The new partnership will strengthen information sharing and coordinated responses to hybrid threats, particularly from Russia, while protecting critical infrastructure

Burnham expressed solidarity following the attempted Russian drone attack at Leipzig airport. Both leaders reaffirmed support for Ukraine and continued pressure on Moscow

Cooperation also covers technology, space and industry. Burnham called for a stronger UK-EU partnership ahead of this year’s summit, without announcing an agreement on EU membership
