German Chancellor Merz Links Government Stability to European Security

During his Kyiv visit, Friedrich Merz framed support for Ukraine as essential to German and European security, linking his government’s stability to Europe’s ability to respond to Russia.

On 4 October, Merz visited Kyiv and announced around €1 billion in additional military support, alongside €350 million for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure

Merz argued that Ukraine’s defence protects Germany and Europe, warning that Russia would eventually turn its war machine against them if it were not stopped

He warned that a German government unable to meet its responsibilities would have far-reaching consequences for Europe, pledging to keep his administration stable and maintain support for Ukraine

Politically, this frames his government’s stability as a strategic European responsibility, adding a security dimension to his call for coalition unity
