G7 Releases Emergency Energy Stocks

G7 countries have agreed to release emergency diesel and oil reserves as surging fuel prices and US pressure expose Europe’s vulnerability to disruptions in global energy supplies.

Quick Brief:

The G7 will coordinate the release of 100 million barrels over four months, with a substantial amount of diesel released within the first 20 days

The move follows US pressure on Europe, after President Donald Trump threatened to restrict US diesel exports unless European countries released emergency stocks. Trump has since ruled out the ban

Europe has become more dependent on US diesel as the war with Iran disrupted supplies from the Gulf, while constrained refining and attacks on Russian refineries have further tightened diesel markets

The crisis highlights Europe’s energy-security exposure: emergency reserves can ease short-term shortages, but disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and tight global diesel supplies remain unresolved
