The “Correct the Map” resolution, led by Togo on behalf of the African Group, passed with 164 votes in favour, one against and six abstentions
The initiative challenges the widely used Mercator projection, which greatly enlarges areas farther from the equator. Africa is actually about 14 times larger than Greenland
The resolution encourages governments, schools and organisations to use Equal Earth or other equal-area maps when relative size matters. It is non-binding and does not ban Mercator maps
The United States was the only country to vote against the resolution. Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine abstained
