Vatican Criticizes EU’s Selective Application of International Law

At a conference on war and ethics, the Vatican criticized the European Union’s approach to international affairs and called for greater consistency in upholding international norms.

Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández accused the EU of applying international law selectively

He noticed that the EU sanctions some invasions and responds differently to others

He argued that political and economic interests increasingly determine how governments apply human rights and democratic principles

Fernández criticized the broad use of self-defense arguments by states, including Russia and the United States, to justify military interventions

The cardinal warned that the doctrine of just war is often used to legitimize conflicts rather than prevent them
