The Council of the European Union has formally approved a Soil Monitoring Directive, establishing the first pan-European legal framework to monitor the condition of soils across member states for the first time. Advocates say it is crucial for food security, water quality and ecosystem stability, and aims for “healthy soils” by 2050. Member states will now need to align national systems to produce comparable data on soil status, degradation and environmental threats. The directive complements other EU environmental laws and contributes to broader efforts under the European Green Deal to enhance nature restoration and climate resilience.
