Russian Economist Fired

The dismissal of a senior economist at Russia’s state development bank has drawn attention to growing tensions between the Kremlin’s wartime narrative and concerns over the economy.

Andrei Klepach, VEB.RF’s chief economist since 2014, was dismissed on 16 August

In a May speech, he warned Russia could not win a prolonged “war of attrition” against Ukraine and its Western supporters

Klepach also warned of economic and technological decline and the risk of a future social crisis

VEB confirmed his departure but did not publicly give a reason; The Bell linked the dismissal to his remarks, citing sources familiar with the matter
