Hungary Eases Block on Ukraine Talks

Hungary has cleared a procedural hurdle in Ukraine’s EU accession talks, while further progress remains conditional on stronger minority education rights.

On 7 October, Hungary allowed preparations to advance for two negotiating clusters covering the internal market and competitiveness

EU ambassadors agreed to invite Ukraine and Moldova to submit their negotiating positions, a step towards formally opening these clusters

Budapest’s backing for their opening depends on Ukraine passing legislation strengthening minority-language education, with a parliamentary vote expected on 12 October

Under Prime Minister Péter Magyar, Hungary has adopted a more cooperative approach towards Kyiv. EU membership still requires reforms and unanimous approval by member states
