Drumcree March Reopens Northern Ireland Divisions

A blocked Orange Order march on 27 September through a Catholic-nationalist area revived one of Northern Ireland’s most sensitive sectarian disputes, testing relations built around the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

The Protestant-unionist Orange Order was authorised to march along Portadown’s Garvaghy Road for the first time in 28 years, under strict limits

Around 2,000 protesters blocked the route, preventing the Drumcree parade from proceeding and renewing the long-running standoff

First Minister Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Féin, the Irish republican party advocating a united Ireland, joined the protest, drawing criticism from unionists

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement largely ended the Troubles and established power-sharing between unionists and nationalists, making renewed sectarian tensions politically sensitive
