Onboarding Blog Authors

We welcome you as a prospective Author!

This onboarding page is intended for both future Regular Contributors and Guest Authors.

Briefly on the difference:
In principle, anyone can submit an article to European Relations as a Guest Author. To become a Regular Contributor at European Relations, you must apply through the official call for applications and submit the required documents. If your application is successful, you will be listed on the About page of European Relations as a Regular Contributor once publishing regularly.

New Author’s Checklist:

  1. Create Your Author Profile
  2. Pitch Your First Article
  3. Write and Submit Your Article
  4. The Review and Revision Process

1. Create Your Author Profile

Start by setting up your profile in the Network:

  • Upload a photo to your Network profile (optional) – A clear, high-quality, and professional portrait photo helps readers connect with you.
  • Fill out your author bio – Tell us who you are in 2–3 sentences (your background, interests, studies, or experience). Please write in the third person and include your academic (and professional) background, areas of expertise and interest, and, if you want, a personal fact about you.
  • Add social links – You can include your LinkedIn or other professional platforms so people can connect with you.

👤 Your photo and bio will be shown on your public author profile

2. Pitch Your First Article

To get started with publishing, head over to the Blog Status Dashboard, which is our dedicated space for pitching new article ideas.

Here’s how to pitch:

  • Click on the “Submit idea” button.
  • Fill out the short form with:
    • Working title
    • A brief description of your idea, including the format (Analysis, Opinion, Explainer, News); you can find all necessary information on article formats and other requirements for Blog articles in our Submission Guidelines.
  • Click Submit – and that’s it!

The article pitch gives you an initial opportunity to articulate your idea and put it into words for the first time, which can be immensely helpful in the writing process. It also allows all authors to see which topics are currently being developed, preventing multiple pieces from being written on precisely the same subject. At the same time, it enables you to build on the work of others, reference their articles from the outset, and learn from what they have already explored.

3. Write and Submit Your Article

It’s time to finalise and submit your full article for publication.

Important: Please follow the instructions in the Submission Guidelines carefully when writing. The more adjustments that are needed during the review process, the longer it will take until your article can be published. This is why we have also published the Editorial Board’s Review Guidelines (which are essentially a specification of the Submission Guidelines in the form of a structured checklist) for our authors, so that you can already take into account the aspects the editors will be looking at during the review. This way, before submitting your article, you can go through the Review Guidelines as a final check and make adjustments to your article yourself.

To submit your article, visit our Submission Page and fill out the Form.

You can paste your article directly into the editor with headings, formatting, and hyperlinks.

Make sure to include any hyperlinks directly in the text. Footnotes or academic citation (in-text citation with a bibliography at the end) are not allowed. You can check links and formatting before final submission in the submission form.

✅ Once submitted, our editors will begin the review and editing process. You’ll be notified when your article is ready for revisions.

4. The Review and Revision Process

What happens after submitting your article?

After you submit your article, an editor from the Editorial Board will be assigned to it. The editor will edit and review the article with regard to formal, linguistic, and substantive criteria. In doing so, the editor follows our Review Guidelines, which further operationalise the Submission Guidelines in the form of a detailed checklist. We therefore strongly recommend that you read both the Submission and Review Guidelines before submitting your article and conduct a self-review in advance. This will give you a clear sense of what the editor will later focus on and where revisions to the article may still be necessary.

It is also advisable to use a language-editing tool such as Grammarly, ProWritingAid, Wordtune, LanguageTool, or Hemingway, all of which offer free versions alongside paid plans. Reviewing your article against the Review Guidelines and carrying out an initial linguistic check should help expedite the review process and enable your article to be published more quickly.

Please note that all editors at European Relations are volunteers. While we do our utmost to ensure a timely review and publication process, we kindly ask for your understanding in the event of any delays.

5. For New Regular Contributors

Once you have successfully applied for the Regular Contributor position and your first article has been published, you can check the About page on the website to see whether we have already listed you as a Regular Contributor. If not, feel free to send us a short email so we don’t forget. We are also happy to provide you with a certificate of your Regular Contributor position, for example, for internship or job applications.

If you have already published an article with us as a Guest Author, you are also welcome to submit your application to become a Regular Contributor.

Commitment as a Regular Contributor:
As a Regular Contributor, you are expected to write about one article per month. Of course, you are welcome to write more (this also increases your chances of being awarded the title Regular Contributor of the Year, which we grant at the end of the year to the most dedicated contributors). Due to studies or work, it may naturally be difficult to write an article in a given month. No problem – just send us a short message at [email protected], and you can continue writing again the following month.
